Surface (<20 m) O2  concentrations, determined in the WOCE hydrographic program, are plotted versus the oxygen solubility at the temperature and salinity of each sample.  Surface oxygen samples are somewhat supersaturated (concentrations lie above the 1:1 line representing saturation) due to oxygen production by photosynthesis.  The cluster of data points falling below the saturation line at an oxygen solubility near 365 µmol/kg are from the month of November in the Southern Ocean.  They are likely undersaturated due to mixing of deep, low oxygen water, to the surface.  The inset shows sample locations.  The graph was prepared using Ocean Data View with the Electronic WOCE Atlas.
