Surface (<20 m) O2 concentrations, determined in the WOCE
hydrographic program, are plotted versus the oxygen solubility at the
temperature and salinity of each sample. Surface oxygen samples are
somewhat supersaturated (concentrations lie above the 1:1 line representing
saturation) due to oxygen production by photosynthesis. The cluster of
data points falling below the saturation line at an oxygen solubility near 365
µmol/kg are from the month of November in the Southern Ocean. They are
likely undersaturated due to mixing of deep, low oxygen water, to the surface.
