Platinum (Pt)

Atomic number: 78
Atomic weight: 195.08
Average concentration in ocean: 250 fmol/kg
Residence time:

Distribution in ocean
The vertical profile of platinum concentration has been determined in the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans with somewhat different results (data).  A nutrient-like profile was found in the Pacific (Goldberg et al., 1986).  A scavenged element profile was found in the Indian Ocean (Jacinto and van den Berg, 1989).  A conservative profile was found with uniform values of 280±70  fmol/kg in the Atlantic Ocean and 240±70 fmol/kg in the Pacific Ocean (Colodner et al., 1993).

Speciation
Platinum exists in seawater in the +II oxidation state as PtCl42-

Analysis
Platinum has been determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry after sample preconcentration and by cathodic stripping voltammetry.
