Palladium (Pd)

Atomic number: 46
Atomic weight: 106.42
Average concentration in ocean: 560 fmol/kg
Residence time: 10,000 to 100,000 years

Distribution in ocean
Palladium has a modified, nutrient-like profile similar to that of copper.  Concentrations are low at the surface and increase with depth nearly continuously (data).

Speciation
Palladium is present in seawater in the +II oxidation state as the PdCl42- ion.

Residence time
The palladium residence time was estimated to be 104 to 105 years, based on analogy of its distribution to that of nickel (Lee, 1983).

Analysis
Palladium is determined by preconcentration on an anion exchange resin, followed by graphite furnace, atomic absorption spectrometry.
