This week, MBARI released its 2023 Annual Report, an immersive exploration of our research, technology, and outreach highlights over the past year.

MBARI was founded with a mission to advance cutting-edge technologies that would enable a new age of ocean exploration. Every engineering and technological advance we have attempted has opened the door to surprising discoveries about the ocean. Our 2023 Annual Report shares how our team has developed technology to assess and track ocean health, visualize the seafloor in remarkable detail, and even monitor an octopus nursery.

With a new research vessel and robotic technology lab on the horizon, MBARI seeks to push the boundaries of ocean science and tech innovation even further. If history is our guide, the coming decades will be nothing short of amazing. There is so much more that we need to know about our ocean—and how to protect it.
