This stunning formation was discovered by researchers exploring hydrothermal vents and associated lava fields in the Gulf of California. This is a view looking up a vent chimney at the underside of a large protruding rim where hot vent fluid (up to 335 degrees Celsius) is ponding underneath. These fluids spill upward because they are less dense than the colder surrounding seawater.
