Postdoc, Physical-Biological Interactions We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow to work with Monique Messié at MBARI in collaboration with Adrian Marchetti and Harvey Seim (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) and Diego Figueroa (University of Texas Rio Grande Valley). The postdoctoral fellow will contribute to a project funded by the National Science Foundation that investigates the influence of nutrient supply by different physical processes (upwelling, island mass effect, internal tides) on functional biodiversity of marine plankton in the Galápagos Archipelago. The postdoc will utilize data collected as part of an upcoming cruise and by a wirewalker profiler system. This postdoctoral project involves both data analysis (i.e., use wirewalker data and other data sources to develop time series of nutrient injection characteristic of each physical process) and simple modeling (1-dimension NPZ-type model).
Research Specialist, Ocean Biogeochemical Sensing MBARI has a position open for a Research Specialist or Research Technician to join the Ocean Biogeochemical Sensing (OBS) Team. The ocean is facing unprecedented changes due to human activity: temperatures are rising, ocean acidity is increasing, oxygen levels are declining, and nutrient distributions are changing. The main mission of the OBS team is to advance autonomous sensing technology, and help establish a sustained global network of biogeochemical profiling floats and gliders. Such an observing system will allow measurements of key biogeochemical parameters from the open ocean to the coast. This position will lead the sensor production and calibration for underwater gliders, as well as development of new biogeochemical sensors. The selected candidate will report to Yui Takeshita, and work closely with members in the OBS team and the Chemical Sensor lab.
Research Specialist, Chemical Sensor Lab MBARI seeks to hire an employee at the Research Technician or Research Specialist level to assist with the management of data from the biogeochemical profiling floats operated as part of the Global Ocean Biogeochemistry (GO-BGC; https://go-bgc.org) and Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling (SOCCOM; https://soccom.princeton.edu) arrays. These are NSF-funded projects to deploy and operate large arrays of profiling floats across the global ocean. The hire will be a part of the Chemical Sensor lab led by Ken Johnson, and will report to Tanya Maurer.
Payroll Specialist MBARI has a position open for a Payroll Specialist. This position ensures that payroll and payroll related transactions are processed and documented in accordance with federal and state regulations and MBARI policies and procedures. The incumbent must have skills in IRC regulations as they apply to payroll, California labor law as it is applied to hours worked, understanding of accrual accounting in relation to payroll transactions and the general processing of those transactions, communication, automated report generation and writing procedures. This position must maintain current and accurate desk procedures, utilize the automated systems and reports to maximize accuracy and efficiency, and be able to navigate regulatory changes as it applies to payroll processing.
3rd Mate, R/V Packard The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is seeking candidates for a third mate aboard the newly delivered state of the art research vessel David Packard. We are looking for candidates that are excited and motivated for the opportunity of commissioning our new vessel. As third mate your work will be key to getting the ship to operational status, out of the shipyard and transiting back to our home port in California. You’ll work with crew members, scientists, and technical staff to build and maintain a collaborative and inclusive environment to achieve mission goals. The third mate is expected to collaborate with other crew to develop procedures, maintenance routines, and safety strategies in areas of their responsibility on the new vessel.
Carbon Flux Postdoc The Carbon Flux Ecology group at MBARI is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to join our team. The postdoctoral fellow will contribute to a multi-institutional, interdisciplinary project funded by the Schmidt Futures Ocean Biogeochemistry Virtual Institute (OBVI). This project will study the role of mesopelagic animals, and their gut microbiomes, in transforming organic matter as it transits through the mesopelagic. Our team will be responsible for collecting sinking particles and analyzing their molecular genetic contents. We will collaboratively synthesize these observations with data from animal gut contents concurrently collected by other research groups. The ideal candidate will be able to pursue and explore their own research goals within this framework.
Biochemistry Researcher MBARI has a position open for a Biochem Research Technician, reporting to Steve Haddock, PhD. Applicants with Master's degree or equivalent experience are encouraged to apply. This position will include performing groundbreaking laboratory experiments on bioluminescence and physiology, and spending up to a week at sea during research cruises. The job activities will be very hands-on, with expertise required beyond brief classroom exposure to a variety of techniques.
Assistant Engineer, R/V David Packard The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is seeking candidates for an Assistant Engineer (OICEW) aboard the state-of-the-art research vessel US Flag David Packard . The ship will be tasked with supporting 5-10 day multi-disciplinary science missions (longer trips are possible). In an average year, the vessel supports about 18-20 science missions per year. Operations consist primarily in supporting remote and autonomous vehicles including a 4000m work class ROV, AUVs and wave gliders. Moorings, CTDs and other science sampling operations are common.
QMED-Oiler R/VDavid Packard The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is seeking candidates for a QMED-Oiler aboard the state-of-the-art research vessel US R/V David Packard, currently under construction in Spain. After delivery, the ship will be tasked with supporting 5-10 day multi-disciplinary science missions (longer trips are possible). In an average year, the vessel supports about 18-20 science missions per year. Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the QMED-Oiler carries out duties as directed at sea and in port to ensure the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the vessel. The successful applicant will be detail oriented and have a willingness and ability to learn new skills.
