The MiniROV, a small fly-away remotely operated vehicle (ROV), was initially designed as a flexible and easy-to-transport ROV system for use in Arctic research and on other ships of opportunity. Over time, the MiniROV has been increasingly used to develop complex instruments and control algorithms. With each successive stage of development, this platform can easily transition from the lab to a test tank to a research vessel.

The MiniROV’s flexibility allows researchers and engineers to use this vehicle to work in the Monterey Bay and beyond, from the ocean’s surface to 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) deep.

In 2015,MBARI researchers and their Mexican colleagues used MBARI’s min-ROV explored a submarine canyon at Cabo Pulmo, near the tip of Baja California. In this photo, a diver swims near the ROV while the research vessel Rachel Carson floats in the background.
