MBARI was founded with a vision to advance cutting-edge technologies that would enable a new age of ocean exploration. Our scientists, engineers, marine operations crew, and communications staff are driven by a curiosity to learn more about the ocean and a passion to protect its future.

MBARI’s new 2024 Annual Report provides an immersive review of our science discoveries, technology innovations, and education and outreach over the past year. The report shares how our team has developed technology to visualize marine life and the seafloor in remarkable detail, worked to inspire a new generation of ocean explorers, and revealed previously unknown deep-sea species—and much more.

2024 marked a watershed year for MBARI as we prepared for the next chapter in our work. We formally took ownership of our new flagship research vessel, completed the construction of a state-of-the-art robotics laboratory, and selected the institute’s next President/CEO—all major developments that will open exciting new opportunities for ocean exploration, science, and technology in 2025.
