Hawaii is feeling the effects of climate change as added stress in the water cycle such as floods and drought. How will this affect the local communities?

Hawaii has begun to feel the effects of climate change as added stress in the water cycle such as floods and drought How will this affect the communities who depend on those water sources. Students will explore and analyze data on the effects climate change on the water cycle using rainfall and ground water dataset and projections. Students will then elaborate and expand on how these changes in the water cycle/water sources can impact the Hawai’ian communities that strongly depend on their water sources.

Ocean Literacy Fundamental Concepts

  • 1.G: The ocean is an integral part of the water cycle and is connected to all of the earth’s water reservoirs via evaporation and precipitation processes., 1.H: The ocean is connected to major lakes, watersheds and waterways because all major watersheds on Earth drain to the ocean. Rivers and streams transport nutrients, salts, sediments and pollutants from watersheds to estuaries and to the ocean.
  • 3.A: The ocean controls weather and climate by dominating the Earth’s energy, water and carbon systems.
