Students look at maps and make predictions for a mystery event. They then compare and contrast data from the event to the current date.

In part 1, students predict an event based on maps of wind, wave direction, height, and pressure. Unaware it’s The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Surf Competition, they make predictions and discuss in groups before the “mystery event” is revealed. In part 2, students collect their own data from PacIOOS Voyager and compare it to the competition maps. They conclude with reflection questions and discussion.
